Default Good Layouts

OK, I know HTML pretty well and all, but my layouts suck. I don't wanna cheat and use FrontPage, and my dad got really mad when I asked for DreamWeaver. I made a layout with frames, but when you click a hyperlink in the hyperlink frame, it opens the page in the hyperlink frame. I'd hate having to add target="_blank" to the links, because that would get annoying. How could I made a COOL layout that's GOOD?

Cheating using FrontPage. Use FrontPage anyway, I do, but don't use its built in tools, just code it and see how it turns out using previews. Also, a good layout, well what you really need is good photoshop skills.

Well, in my opinion, you need more than just "m4d" PhotoShop skillz to make a good layout, you need an eye for design, talent even. Of course, you can train yourself, but there's no "set rules" for what makes a design nice, since beauty is afterall in the eye of the beholder, but if you have an eye for it, it's certainly easier than if you don't.

And yes, using FrontPage or DreamWeaver can be nice, especially when you're starting out, since it helps you with the basics, and gain an understanding of how everything works.

I don't have mad Photoshop skills but I can make cool layouts in it. If you guys want, maybe I could attach a zip file with the images folder and HTML file (and PSD if you want) if you wanna see what I made.

I agree with you Lars. I have made a few sites in Photoshop, they always take a lot longer to load than those which I have coded by hand and then added the pictures in afterwards.

I would advise you to create the structure of the layout in Frontpage/whatever. You can make some healthy looking tables in there, and then just rip out all of the crap code they put in there, or put in the code they miss out. Then add the images later.

FrontPage is crap anyways. :P

But yeah, using Dreamweaver or FP isn't "cheating." I don't think many people code their entire site using Notepad anymore. Anways, using one of those programs can make it easier to learn HTML. I knew all the basics of HTML when I started out. Then, after using DW, I learned pretty much everything else I know now bit by bit.

As for making good layouts, don't be afraid to mess around a bit. Experiment using the tools you have now and see what you get. Learn to get a feel for Frontpage (or DW, if you can get your hands on that)

My dad yelled at me when I asked for a trial of DreamWeaver.

Anyway, I coded a site with only XHTML and CSS in FrontPage, only for the previews. I'm doing all the other pages in Notepad. I really like how it looks.

And that is all that matters. If you like it.

And that we can actually read it!
