Default Compression, is it a good move?

I was reading an article on mezzoblue the other day about CSS Compression, and I was thinking about it again today. I really don't see any point in compressing CSS files. I tend to code websites in completely CSS valid coding, I don't use tables much any more. However, I don't compress my files.

Many people think that you should. However, I was just thinking that would add to strain on the server. You can gzip your file onto your server and have it streamed to your browser which should unzip it for you, thus saving bandwidth. But it would simply increase the server strain.

Then I thought it could be as simple as removing spaces in your coding. That would simply make your coding unreadable. This is a good and a bad thing I suppose, people wouldn't be able to steal your code as easily; however, if you want to add to it, then you're screwed really. Unless you want to back up your data twice, one compressed and uncompressed. Which defeats the purpose really.

I'm not sure on my stance here, thoughts?
