Default When creating a website...

When you're creating a website, do you first make it all in photoshop and then slice it up, or do you create the structure of the site and then use images to fill up the holes?

Personally, I always do the latter. I know what I want my site to look like, so I create it with CSS and then fill in where I need to with the images. It works really well .

I tend to do the latter as well. I did a mockup of the current design of my site in Paint (!!!) and then coded it when I had something I could go with, using a Photoshop-like program to do the graphics.

I've made 2 websites this week. One, although granted it's not a serious page and I did in a hurry, I started with a blank Notepad page, and the other I started in Photoshop by designing the background graphics.

I have done both, but I tend to prefer to place images into a layout that I like, rather than coding an image that I like. As it will never look exactly the same if you do it via CSS. Damn IE.

I always plan it out on paper first, so that I'm not just doing things in Photoshop for the sake of using that feature. I sort out a layout, sort out how the coding should work, and only then does it go into production. But the coding goes first, the skins are the last thing to get sorted.

I too always find it easier to sketch out a few preliminary layouts on paper. It takes seconds to draw one out on paper, I'll normally sketch out 5-10 layouts before I'm happy with one, then I'll go into coding it.

Structure first, always.

I just open up Dreamweaver, create a simple table, and mess with things from there. Images are sloppily thrown in piece by piece. Take VGRC's layout, for example. I had literally no idea where I wanted to go with it. It just came to me as I went along. The whole process is sloppy, until the end when I clean up a bit. That's how I work, that's how I live.
