Default Competition(s)

I was just thinking that we should start a few competitions, such as web design, graphic design and programming and have some small prizes for it. Like web hosting for free for X months or a TLD for two years (which would be reasonably cheap). If advertised properly, it should pull in some people, and make them stay.

Thoughts?

I like this idea. What do you consider advertised properly?

If we can get the word out about this place then it would surely bring more people in. Although they can be annoying, there are loads of small websites out there for graphic design, if we 'inform' them about the competition, then they are bound to submit, if there's a chance at a prize. And that may hopefully encourage them to stay.

With the programmers, well, I'm not sure as I'm not really the programmer. Purple Haze probably knows a few communities though, he seems very fluent with PHP. If we can get the word out, for free, then we're surely going to be saving a degree of money in replacement of advertising. Although Adwords wouldn't be a bad way for a few weeks, well, that's my guess.

What kind of prize would you have for the programmers, do you think? More hosting?

I would be willing to put up some options and let the winner decide which he/she would want.

If the programming is top notch and/or an original webdev tool that could be added as a resource to the forum, then we can not only bring in member, but now we're a resource. Full credit for the tool will be given as a sitewide link in addition to the contest prize.

Archaic Sage wil be running the competition. So post any ideas or thoughts on this for him. I'll stand behind his decisions!

Well my site is currently going through a planning and designing stage of Version 2. At the moment I feel that the site has a lot of content but a bit of a dull layout. TSA agrees but thinks that we should concentrate more on making our content stand out, rather than fade into the background.

Let me just tell you that we have some really great ideas going. Programming has begun, and I am really impressed with where V2 might end up. If it ends up where I want it (and we won't release it until it is), then I think that any future versions will just be smaller updates. Also watch out for a possible change in name (at last).

I was thinking of having one big competition, with two separate categories, web design and programming. Although that would mean two winners, which would ultimately mean that the prize would be smaller. Me and TalkWebDev are still talking about the levels of prizes.

I think that a vBulletin License, like you were talking about, would be an extremely sought after prize. Our sites (Nintendo Domain and Zelda Domain) are using IPBv2 at the moment. But we are not entirely happy with it. If we had the chance to win a vBulletin License, that would be great.

We're still discussing the prize, but even if it's not a VB, it's going to be a great prize nonetheless.

So is the competition to make a great site and then you will decide on the winner? Is it purely how it looks and works, or the amount of content as well?
