That's very true. Partly why I love vBulletin - Because it's such a largely used and supported script, you know that the developers take it seriously enough to stay on top of things at all times, and that's good.
Support is excellent, too!

phpBB support is more than dodgy I find. But then again, it doesn't cost £80+ to buy it.

Well, it is freeware, as you pointed out. And the community is pretty large, so odds are that someone in there can answer the questions you have.
But as you said though, you get what you pay for - Support included.

There are a lot of people on the community, but I find a lot of them will just say read the Documentation. And, to be honest, who wouldn't read it before posting a question?

vBulletin has always been my preference. I found it a lot easier to mod the back-end than I did with the likes of OpenBB and phpBB. vBulletin 3.5.0 (enough to warrant a jump to 4.0.0) is looking incredibly promising as well.
Though they really need to sort out the default templates the include with the software. Sometimes there's more tables than needed and some of the code can be horrendous.

I also use vBulletin 3, and have found it to work efficiently for my needs. Although I've never really launched a website and had it running for a lengthy period, I've found vBulletin to be effective for self-learning the PHP & SQL scripting.
I think the default templates are absolutely terrible, and quite frankly, I thought the older vBulletin 2 templates to be more promising visually. That being said, it isn't a terrible loss, since most people end up changing them instantly.
The new vBulletin version, as aerith stated, seems to look very promising. It'll probably revolutionize forum communities with the new AJAX system. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of that.
