Default The end of Public PageRank?

People are noticing strange behaviour in Google's public PageRank system, including we here at TWD (just look in the what's your PageRank thread). Services such as PageRank.net are messed up, and the Google toolbar is just greyed out where the PR for a site should be.

Some people are now even speculating that the public displayal of PageRank is actually dead.

You can see some peoples thoughts about this here, here and here.

I personally hope that this is not the end of it, because in my opinion it's a valuable tool to see how well your chances are of actually getting ranked and indexed in decent positions in Google, or if you have more work to do.

I noticed that the PR on everything has disappeared. Thanks to the PR extension on Firefox.

I think that this is a negative thing on the web design community, although people do strive for the perfect PR, it also means that people will strive to create the perfect, spiderable website, which is something that we should all be trying to do.

Negative? I don't think so. People were building sites just to get their PR up, so they could sell them. Generally the overall value of PR was way to hyped.

I am glad that it seems to be going away. Hopefully it won't return either. I don't really know much about this "TrustRank", but I'm going to look in to that.

Well it seems to be working fine again, without any changes at all (at least for the sites I've checked).

It would be weird if this was a technical problem on Google's behalf.. weird indeed.

Well, that's nice to know. I liked PR. It made me feel good to see that I can code to make search engines like me (or, Mambo can! lol).

From what I heard somewhere (I think it was Webmaster World), this was a technical problem on Google's side, and everything is back unchanged now. Talk about a lot of hype for nothing!
