Physical servers
I often read that people actually own their own servers. I don't mean rent out a dedicated server, but have actually bought them and have them at thier home. Well, the main point of this is wouldn't you need at least a T1 line to run a decent dedicated server at your own home?

You'd need a decent connection to run your own server, yes, at least if you were going to host sites of decent popularity. A 10Mbit line is pretty standard for a dedicated server.

It must cost a fortune to have it at your own home. A lot more than just renting out the space from a host. These people are mad.

Well I don't think there's a whole lot of people who actually hosts it at home. Some do it just for the fun of it, but most "serious" sites will be found hosted at a decent datacenter, and not from some person's basement.

Which must be the only sane way to do it.

Yes, unless you just happen to have a great connection for one reason or another, and a whole lot of time on your hands to constantly manage your servers

Well, I suppose if you're obsessive about it you may have a good thing going. Or an unlimited budget...

Yup. I might actually be purchasing my very own server quite soon. I will have it co-located though, so I won't be running it out of my living room.

Nice Lars, what type of box are you getting? I love those new servers from Apple - They just look so, seexy. (I know, I need to get out more)

My server manager was actually suggesting one of Apple's machines to me the other day. We still haven't decided what to go with, and where we'll co-locate it - It'll probably be up to him to figure out what fits our needs, and I'll take it from there.
