Linking help for design site
I've finally opened up my portfolio, which is disgustingly empty owing to contractual difficulties with most of my previous employers (they don't want to be advertised yet as I tend to work for sites that are up and coming). Anyway, although the site is SEOed well, at least I think it is, I have a PR0 and no inbound links.
What would be the best way of getting around this. Would purchasing advertisement links on other sites be a good idea? I don't have ads on this site, as I feel it would remove the professional element from the site. I've not got a lot of money, as I'm broke from an expensive holiday at the moment. Free = best.
Any ideas?

You should submit to free web directories and trade reciprocal links. There are several link exchange programs that will link to PR 0 sites. Its definitely harder to get reciprocals when a site is new. Most webmasters fear new, or low PR websites because they feel that the return value of the links is not helpful.
An experienced webmaster would whois the domain and see a new creation date. He would then decide whether or not he feels your site is related and would offer some value.
Starting reciprocal link campaigns is always hard when you have no PageRank, but you need to get is somehow, so take out a low priced ad and trade links with some link exchanges.
Many of the link exchanges out there now can help you start, but be cautious who you link to at all times and be sure to track your links. Some webmasters are devious and remove links feeling that they will help him more when he does not return them.
Posting in forums with a sig, can help you start as well, but the value of most forum links is low as the pages are too dynamic to be deep spidered by the Search Engines (SE's)

I've been active on many of the top designers blogs since before I got my domain, and since I got it I've been posting on each blog. Yahoo and MSN recognise them as real links, so I've got over 60 links from those things, but Google just ignores them.
My Zelda site has a PR4, and I've advertised from there with a permanent link, and I've also added my site on a programming site with PR5. So those two links should give it a slightly better linkage quality. But it's the trouble of getting big. Word of mouth is great. And I've got an ad in all of the forums I go to. It's just waiting now I suppose.

The toolbars have not been updated yet, so you will have to wait it out now.
Part of any good SEO campaign is the targeting of links. As not all links are equal and PR plays only some factors in the link ads you are buying. So sites offering ads that have numerous links off them loose the value to you. Blogs, for instance, link to many sites with the Blogroll feature which splits the outgoing PageRank equally amongst the sites it links to so 10 links off a PR 5 pages means 10 divided by the 5 transfers (or 1 tenth of the PR 5). While you may see these links in backlink checks, it does not mean they are good. I am noticing alot of PR 0 spammy adwords sites popping up all over the place and being counted in the top 10 backlinks on numerous sites. These links will eventually become supplemental listings once G realizes the game these webmaster are playing with them. The webmasters believe that putting Adwords on the page spiders the site more frequently, and keep it online despite the poor content or lack of any.
So basically what I am saying is that you need to seek out links that are more powerful and have something in common. Like finding the backlinks that the top ranking sites, for the keywords you are targeting, that link to several top ranking sites and do whatever you can to get there as well. Those are the links you want!
Ads alone will work to some extent, but keep in mind any old PR link is not necessarily a good link and can also hurt sites as there are penalization factors and time factors involved in links. G no longer counts links that fall under "Sponsored Links" headings the way they used to so many links are becoming de-valued even on Authority domains. You can thank the high PR sites that sell unrelated links on their networks to anyone whos wiling to pay.
Link building is becoming very strategic and many of these sites selling ads are being devalued in more ways that just the outbound links. They are actually loosing their reputation (PageRank) and don't even know it!

It's just becoming annoyingly more complex everyday isn't it? lol
Thanks for the help. It's going to be a while before I can get my site in a good PR. As a designer, I'm not well known at all, so what I'm finding is networking is almost as important as a good link strategy.
